Comhairle nan Eilean Siar has unanimously agreed to change the roles and responsibilities in its leadership structure.

At a meeting of the full Comhairle tonight it was agreed that the Convener, Mr Alex MacDonald, will take on the role of civic head of the authority whilst Vice-Convener Mr Angus Campbell will become the political leader.

In a report to the Council meeting Chief Executive Malcolm Burr said: “It may be felt more desirable that there be greater clarity as regards the political leadership structures of the Comhairle, and that the political and civic leadership duties be more clearly allocated between the Convener and Leader”.

The moves bring the Comhairle into line with most mainland local authorities. They will be subject to review prior to the next local government elections.
