Ferry Consultation When Appropriate 09 October 2008

In response to recent claims by Storas Uibhist regarding the introduction of a dedicated ferry service on the Lochboisdale to Mallaig route, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar's Chairman of Transportation, Cllr Donald Manford, said:

"It is unfortunate that two representatives from Storas Uibhist who attended the meeting with Scottish Government officials, as well as representatives from Calmac and the Comhairle have left the meeting with a different view of the discussion from the other three parties."

The Scottish Government, Cal-Mac and the Comhairle share the view that the meeting agreed the Scottish Government will examine the proposal for a dedicated Mallaig-Lochboisdale service using the Claymore in detail to determine costs, the benefits which could be delivered, and the potential impacts on other services.

The three parties also recognize the Comhairle's commitment to carrying out a consultation with all affected communities at the appropriate time.

Cllr Manford added: "The Comhairle has not ruled out further consultation. We will consult with the communities when there is a viable, affordable proposal on the table."
