Responding to the news that the Kenneth MacKenzie Harris Tweed Mill at Stornoway is to cut 36 jobs, Convener of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, Alex MacDonald, said –
“It is deeply disappointing to hear that 36 jobs are to be cut at the Harris Tweed Mill in Stornoway. There were encouraging signs recently that the Harris Tweed industry was entering a period of growth and renewal and there were high hopes and expectations for the future. The Comhairle has always been supportive of the industry and will continue to work with the industry, as illustrated by the formation of the industry liaison group, and other supportive agencies to consolidate and expand this important sector of the Islands’ economy. There is still huge potential within the industry but it is obvious that more investment is required, particularly in the area of international marketing. We have heard recently from the Enterprise Minister, Jim Mather, about his commitment to revitalizing the economy of the Western Isles, and this setback for the Harris Tweed industry is an excellent opportunity for him to back up his words with a financial commitment to the industry to ensure that Harris Tweed has a sustainable long term future.”
