Comhairle nan Eilean Siar’s Commercial Operations Unit (COU) has been successful in retaining the Hebridean Housing Partnership (HHP) Maintenance Term Contracts for the next three years, securing local jobs and apprenticeships.
Cllr Angus Campbell, Chairman of the Comhairle’s Policy and Resources Committee, said: “By winning these contracts, along with agreeing a five year Service Level Agreement with Technical Services, the Building Maintenance Unit of the COU has increased its sustainability. In addition, it means the jobs of numerous Craft Operatives are secured and the COU can continue to invest in training opportunities for young people through offering Apprenticeship training over a wide range of trades.”
There are two contracts, one for Lewis and Harris and one for Uist and Barra. The value is in the region of £1m per annum.
The COU employs over 120 people and has 12 apprentices.
George Lonie, Chair of HHP said “I am extremely pleased with the outcome of the tendering process for this contract. We are looking forward to working together with the Commercial Operations Unit’s team to deliver a first class repairs service”.
Kevin Paterson, Tenant Board Member of HHP, agreed saying “I particularly welcome the COU’s commitment to an appointment system so HHP’s tenants will know when repairs will be carried out at a time convenient to themselves. I am also pleased to see that the performance of our repairs service will be closely monitored and that tenant’s views on the service will be used to improve how we operate. This is good news for all of our tenants throughout the islands”.
HHP owns and manages over 2200 houses throughout the Western Isles.
