Equal Opportunities Policy

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar seeks to adopt a policy of equal opportunities in employment and to this end declares that there will be no discrimination of race, colour, religion, sex, marital status or disability in any sphere of the Comhairle's employment.

It is the duty of every Panel, Manager and Supervisor to ensure that this policy is observed and Personnel Staff are responsible for regularly monitoring the implementation of the Policy.

Equal Opportunities - Teaching Staff

  1. The Scottish Teachers Service Conditions Committee affirms that all employees should be afforded equal opportunities in the employment context, irrespective of their sex, marital status, race, religion or colour. Accordingly, none of the classes of employees to which this Scheme relates shall be discriminated against contrary to the terms of the Race Relations Act 1976, The Equal Pay Act 1970, and the Sex Discrimination Act 1975.

  2. Notwithstanding the title or description of any job, no discrimination on grounds of sex or marital status is implied or intended, and the conditions of employment in the Scheme are applicable equally to employees of either sex, and irrespective of marital status.

  3. The provisions of this Scheme do not differentiate in respect of sex, marital status, race, religion or colour, and authorities, in their application of the Scheme, and in the operation of their recruitment, training and promotion policies, are urged to develop and practice the concept of equal opportunities for all.

  4. The Scottish Teachers Service Conditions Committee provides appropriate machinery for the settlement of differences arising from any form of discrimination in employment in the local government service in Scotland.
